How do I speed up crossing into the U.S.?

  Lewiston Warehouse - Brokers
1. Get your SCAC (Standard Carrier Alpha Code). Contact the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) at 1-703-838-1868.
2. Alert U.S. Customs Service. When you receive your NMFTA letter notifying you of your SCAC, fax a copy to: Charles Bennett, Office of Applications Development, U.S. Customs Service (USCS), 1-703-921-7173 (fax number).
3. Develop your company's bar code. Do it in house or through a commercial printer. Remember that the SCAC, NUMBER AND CHECK DIGIT must be continuous without spaces or dashes.
4. Take bar code sample to USCS. Place the bar code label on a blank USCS manifest (CF7533) and deliver it to the station supervisor at the U.S. Customs office at Lewiston-Queenston. The label should be in column one to make sure U.S. Customs can scan your company's PAPS bar code.
5. Contact your U.S. Customs broker. Notify broker that because your company will participate in PAPS, you will need the broker's three-digit filer code. At the same time, find out how to fax your commercial invoices - with PAPS bar codes - to the broker while the goods are still in Canada.
6. Get all the details of PAPS at Lewiston-Queenston. Telephone the U.S. Customs Commercial Warehouse at 1-716-282-1500, ext. 216.
NOTE: PAPS is not interchangeable with the Canadian PARS System for Canadian-bound commercial traffic.
